What is School Neuropsychology?
School Neuropsychology “requires the integration of neuropsychological and educational principles to the assessment and intervention processes with infants, children, and adolescents to facilitate learning and behavior within the school and family systems. School neuropsychologists also play an important role in the curriculum development, classroom design, and the integration of differential instruction that is based on brain-behavior principles in order to provide an optimal learning environment for every child” (Miller, DeFina, & Lang, 2004).
What is a School Neuropsychological Assessment?
The purpose of a School Neuropsychological Assessment is to comprehensively assess the “whole child” according to their functioning across a variety of domains that are related to academic performance. A school neuropsychological assessment evaluates psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychological abilities and processes, social-emotional functioning, and academic achievement. Further, the information gathered from these measures is interpreted in light of information from parent, teacher, and client interviews, rating scales, and behavioral observations.
What is the difference between the School Neuropsychological Assessment and the standard psychological/psycho-educational evaluation?
All components of a traditional psychological/psycho-educational assessment will be included in the School Neuropsychological Assessment. The School Neuropsychological Assessment will likely include additional measures of attention, memory, language, and executive functioning (only if deemed as necessary; this list is not exhaustive). The interpretation of the assessment results will follow a neuropsychological perspective focused on how the brain processes, stores, and retrieves information that is necessary to succeed in the academic environment. The goal of a School Neuropsychological Assessment is to gain a better understanding of a child’s cognitive, neuropsychological, social-emotional, and academic functioning so as to better inform instruction, intervention, and accommodations (if necessary).
